It is not a single procedure but several chosen together. The components address the appearance of the visible teeth and gums without compromising function:
- Whitening, lightens tooth shade; the least invasive option, and reversible in the sense that no tooth structure is removed.
- Veneers, thin facings bonded to the front surface of teeth to alter shape, shade, or alignment; this involves removing a small amount of enamel, which does not grow back.
- Crowns, full-coverage restorations, used where a tooth is damaged or structurally compromised, not for purely cosmetic reasons.
- Gum contouring, reshaping the gum line where it sits unevenly or covers too much of the teeth.

When Is a Smile Makeover Indicated, and When Is It Not?
A smile makeover is indicated when a procedure restores both function and appearance, such as a crown on a cracked tooth, and it's unnecessary when healthy teeth would be cut down for a result whitening or minor reshaping could achieve. More than in most areas of dentistry, the optional and unnecessary states matter here, since much of cosmetic work is elective.

- Urgent, rarely. Cosmetic work itself is not urgent. An underlying problem might be: an infected or cracked tooth needs treatment before any veneer or crown is considered.

How Is a Smile Makeover Actually Performed?

Pain & Biological Response
Why discomfort occurs here. Teeth carry sensory nerves inside the pulp; preparing a tooth for a veneer or crown, or reshaping gum, can stimulate them. Whitening can cause temporary sensitivity because it opens the microscopic tubules in the tooth surface, briefly exposing the nerve to temperature.
How anaesthesia blocks it. For veneer, crown, or gum work, local anaesthetic blocks the sodium channels in the nerves serving the tooth and gum, so pain signals do not reach the brain. Whitening is generally done without anaesthetic; its sensitivity is short-lived and managed with desensitising agents.
What you actually feel. With anaesthetic in place you may feel pressure and vibration during preparation, sensed by different nerves than pain. After whitening, brief cold or heat sensitivity is common and settles within days.
Normal recovery vs infection. Mild sensitivity after preparation, or transient gum tenderness after contouring, is normal and fades. Sensitivity or pain that *worsens* over days, gum swelling, or discharge is not part of normal recovery and is the pattern of infection or an irritated nerve.
When pain signals a complication. Lingering pain in a prepared tooth, throbbing, or sensitivity that intensifies rather than fading can indicate the pulp is inflamed and should be assessed, occasionally a prepared tooth needs further treatment.

Recovery & Mechanical Longevity

Mechanical longevity depends on the material, the bite, and care. Veneers and crowns are durable but not permanent, they can chip or debond and are eventually replaced. Because preparation removes enamel that does not regrow, a veneered or crowned tooth will always need *some* restoration thereafter; that is part of the decision. Restorative cases are reviewed as part of the practice's standard follow-up. Protecting the result means good hygiene and, where grinding is a factor, a night guard. Healing is biological and varies between people.
