Implant-Supported Dentures — Stability Without Full Fixed Arch

Implant-supported dentures combine implant stability with the removability of dentures. Typically 2–4 implants per arch with a bar or ball attachment system. At Stunning Dentistry: CAD $4,000–$8,000 both arches — a lower-cost alternative to full fixed arches.

Types of Implant-Supported Dentures

  • Ball attachment (locator): 2 implants per arch, simplest design, easiest for patients to manage, good retention, less invasive
  • Bar attachment: 2–4 implants, more retention with lateral bar engaging implants, less vertical movement, better load distribution
  • Magnetic attachments: emerging technology, 2 implants, minimal daily maintenance, good for dexterity-limited patients
  • Mini implants: 2–4 per arch, lower cost, less invasive surgery, suitable for lower denture stabilization, faster healing

Who Chooses Implant-Supported Dentures?

  • Current denture wearers experiencing instability, soreness, or bone resorption complications
  • Patients seeking significant implant stability improvement at lower cost than full fixed arches
  • Patients with limited bone volume unsuitable for fixed arch protocols without major grafting
  • Patients prioritizing simplicity of maintenance and daily denture removal over permanence
  • Patients with limited budget but want to move beyond conventional dentures
  • Patients who prefer removable option for travel or specific lifestyle needs

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I upgrade from overdentures to fixed teeth later?

Yes. If you start with implant-supported dentures and later decide you want permanent fixed teeth, additional implants can be placed and a fixed arch prosthesis fabricated. Your existing implants are retained. This is a valid 'stepping stone' approach for budget-conscious patients.

How stable are implant-supported dentures?

Significantly more stable than conventional dentures — minimal vertical or lateral movement. The implants lock the denture down. However, movement is possible during forceful function (unlike fixed arches which are completely rigid). Most patients report feeling confident eating and speaking.

Can I sleep in an implant-supported denture?

It's recommended to remove the denture nightly for implant/tissue health — same as conventional dentures. Overnight removal allows tissue rest and improves long-term implant health. Many patients do remove them at night, others keep them in. Your case manager discusses optimal approach.

What if an implant fails under an overdenture?

Implant failure is rare (2–5%) and covered by our lifetime warranty. If an implant fails, it can be replaced at no cost. For 2-implant designs, a single failure still maintains denture function with remaining implant, though movement increases.
